Verdict
The Wave Mini is a low-cost way to add VOC and humidity awareness to a room and to bring another point into an existing Airthings setup. It does not measure CO₂, radon or particles, so on its own it answers a narrow set of questions: is something releasing chemicals in here, and is the room damp enough to worry about mould. For a nursery, a bathroom wall or a room with new furniture, that can be exactly what is needed. As a first air quality monitor for a home, most buyers will be better served by a model with CO₂.

What a VOC Monitor Tells You
Total VOC sensors respond to a broad range of organic compounds and report a single relative index. That makes the Wave Mini good at showing cause and effect: spray a cleaner and the index jumps; open a window and it falls. Owners use it to find out which activity is behind a lingering smell or a headache. It cannot say whether the compound is harmless or not, and readings are not comparable between brands. Our article on choosing a VOC monitor covers the sensor technology in more depth.
Humidity and the Mould Risk Estimate
The humidity sensor is arguably the more useful of the two. Sustained humidity above the mid-60s percent at typical room temperatures supports mould growth on cool surfaces, and the app’s mould-risk indicator is a simple way to keep an eye on that in a bathroom, basement or bedroom with cold external walls. See choosing a humidity meter for the numbers behind it.
Strengths
- Inexpensive entry into the Airthings app and dashboard.
- Battery powered and small, so it can go where damp problems are.
- Clear cause-and-effect VOC graphs.
Limitations
- No CO₂, radon or particles.
- VOC index is relative and cannot identify compounds.
- Bluetooth only without a hub.
How It Compares
The Wave Enhance adds NDIR CO₂, pressure and a noise sensor for a moderate step up in price and is the better first monitor. The Wave Mini makes sense as a second or third point, or where VOCs and humidity are the specific concern.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Wave Mini measure CO₂?
No. It measures VOCs, humidity and temperature. For CO₂ look at the Wave Enhance or Wave Plus.
What is the mould risk indicator?
The app estimates mould risk from sustained humidity and temperature. It is an estimate, not a detection of mould.
Can I use it without a phone?
Waving in front of the unit shows a colour indicator. Numbers and history need the app over Bluetooth.
What does the VOC reading mean?
It is a total VOC index that rises with airborne chemicals from cleaning, cooking, paint and furnishings. It does not identify which chemical is present.
