How to Choose an Engine Borescope
Four specifications decide whether a borescope can do cylinder work:
Probe Diameter
Most automotive plug holes accept 5.5 to 6.5 mm. Small engines, motorcycles and injector ports may need 3.9 mm. Wider probes carry bigger sensors and more light.
Two-Way or Four-Way
Two-way tips sweep in one plane and you twist the cable for the rest. Four-way with rotation and a lock lets you look around a piston without touching the cable.
Screen and Capture
A 720p or 1080p panel shows scoring and valve edges that a WVGA panel blurs. On-screen zoom and a memory card let you document what you found.
Heat and Oil
Cylinders are warm and oily. An IP67 probe and a high-temperature alarm protect the camera; wait for a hot engine to cool before scoping it.
Most automotive plug holes are threaded M14 or M12, so a 5.5 to 6.5 mm probe passes through with the plug removed. Motorcycle, small-engine and some direct-injection ports are tighter, which is where a 3.9 mm probe earns its place. Measure the port, or check the plug thread size, before buying.
Can a borescope see the valves through the spark plug hole?
Yes, if the tip articulates. The plug hole is usually offset from the valves, so a straight probe sees the piston crown and part of the cylinder wall only. A steerable tip turned toward the head lets you look at the intake and exhaust valve faces and seats. Turning the crank by hand to open each valve gives a better view.
Do I need four-way articulation for engine work?
Not always. A two-way tip covers a cylinder if you rotate the cable by hand to change the plane. Four-way with 360 degree rotation and an angle lock is faster and less fiddly, which matters when you are scoping all cylinders on a misfire diagnosis.
Is a borescope safe to use in a hot engine?
Wait for it to cool. Several listings here specify a temperature alarm or automatic shutdown, at 70 C on the FOXWELL Y400, 85 C on the Mrcartool N180 and 90 C on the Ralcam M5, which tells you the camera is not designed for a running or freshly stopped engine.
Will a borescope tell me why a cylinder has low compression?
It can show the likely cause: vertical scoring on the wall, a burned exhaust valve edge, heavy carbon on a valve seat, or a damaged piston crown. It cannot measure ring seal or valve seating. Pair the scope with a compression or leak-down test and use the image to explain the number.

The manufacturer states a 5.5 mm probe, contrasted with the 8 mm probes on standard borescopes, and a 180 degree articulating tip driven by a thumb joystick that sweeps left and right and holds any position. Held steady, it lets you park the camera on an exhaust valve seat and look for a burned edge.
The screen is the other reason it leads the list. Teslong specifies a 5-inch 1280x720 IPS display with 1.3x and 1.5x digital magnification, and the listing names cylinder walls, carbon deposits and valve condition as the intended subjects. Six LEDs with brightness control light the bore; the 3000 mAh battery is described as lasting a full shift, with USB-C charging. It works without a phone or app.
The trade-offs are those of any two-way scope: you rotate the cable by hand to change the plane of articulation, and 5 ft is the only probe length offered. Camera sensor resolution and waterproof rating are not stated. For compression-loss and misfire diagnosis it is the straightforward choice.

Teslong TD500 3.9 mm Articulating Borescope Best Slim Probe
A 3.9 mm probe is the reason to buy the TD500 in this version. The manufacturer states a 0.15 inch diameter, which is the figure that matters for small-engine plug holes, motorcycle cylinders, direct-injection ports and any bore that a 5.5 or 6.2 mm probe will not enter. Articulation is two-way, and the listing describes it as steerable enough to inspect engine components without disassembly.
The display is a 5-inch IPS panel that Teslong describes as WVGA, so it is a lower-resolution screen than the 720p unit above. A built-in wireless adapter lets a second person watch on a tablet, which is useful when one technician is feeding the probe and another is reading the image. A 32 GB microSD card comes installed, with a USB-C cable, case and a stated 12-month warranty.
The listing gives no camera resolution, no cable length, no battery capacity and no LED count, so those are unknowns until the manual is in hand. A thinner probe also means a smaller sensor and less light, which owners of slim scopes commonly note. Buy it for access, not for image quality.

Mrcartool N180 4-Way Articulating Borescope Best Value
The N180 gives four-way articulation at the tier the two-way Teslongs occupy, which is why it takes the value slot. The manufacturer states 360 degree rotation and 210 degree flexion from a joystick, with the tip lockable at any angle, so the cable does not have to be twisted by hand to look around a piston crown. The probe is 6.2 mm (the listing also says 6.25 mm), which enters a standard plug hole but is wider than the two Teslongs.
Image options are the widest here: three resolution modes of 1280x720, 1920x1080 and 2592x1944, viewed on a 5-inch 1080p IPS screen with 8x zoom and stored as JPG or AVI on the built-in 32 GB card. The probe is rated IP67 and oil-resistant, six LEDs have four brightness levels, and a temperature sensor sounds a buzzer above 85 C and pauses imaging until it cools.
The listing warns that its two similar cables must not be swapped, and notes the iOS app is not currently available. Battery capacity is not stated. The main unit carries a stated 3-year warranty.

What an engine borescope has to do
A general-purpose inspection camera looks down a pipe or into a wall cavity. An engine borescope has to pass through a spark plug or injector port, which is a fixed diameter, and then turn to look sideways at the valve faces and cylinder wall, which are not in line with the port. That is why two specifications dominate this page: probe diameter, which decides whether the scope gets in, and articulation, which decides what it can see once it is there. Probe diameter: the number that rules everything
Standard automotive spark plugs use M14 or M12 threads, and a 5.5 to 6.5 mm probe passes through the hole with the plug out. Teslong makes the point on its 5.5 mm listing that standard 8 mm borescopes do not fit these ports, and the FOXWELL and Mrcartool listings say the same about 8 mm and 8.5 mm probes. Below that, small engines, motorcycles, outboards and direct-injection ports can be tighter, and that is the case for the 3.9 mm TD500. The trade is light and sensor size: a thinner probe carries a smaller camera and fewer LEDs, and owner reviews of slim scopes across brands consistently mention darker, noisier images. Buy the widest probe that fits the ports you actually inspect.
Two-way versus four-way articulation
A two-way tip bends left and right in one plane. To look at a valve that is above the port rather than beside it, you twist the semi-rigid cable by hand until the plane lines up, then steer. It works, and both Teslong picks do it, but it takes a hand off the screen. A four-way head, as on the Mrcartool N180 and the two Ralcam models, adds rotation and, on those listings, a lock that holds the tip at the chosen angle. The N180 states 360 degree rotation and 210 degree flexion; the Ralcam listings state four-way 360 degree steering with a lock. Scoring on a cylinder wall is a set of fine vertical lines; a burned valve is a small notch on the seat edge. Heat, oil and the probe rating
Cylinders are oily and, unless the engine has sat for hours, warm. Three listings state an IP67 probe (Mrcartool N180, FOXWELL Y400, Anykit), which covers the oil and coolant a probe meets in a bore. Three also state a temperature limit: the Y400 shuts down at 70 C, the N180 alarms above 85 C and the Ralcam M5 warns at 90 C. Those numbers are lower than a running engine’s cylinder head, so the rule is simple: scope a cold engine, wipe the probe after each cylinder, and do not leave it inside while cranking. The Teslong listings do not state an ingress rating or a temperature limit, so treat them with the same care.
Which scope for which job
A general automotive technician doing compression and misfire work is best served by the Teslong 5.5 mm: slim enough for plug holes, sharp enough to read a valve seat, and a complete kit. A motorcycle, powersports or small-engine shop needs the 3.9 mm TD500 for the ports the others will not enter. A shop that scopes engines daily and wants to look around a piston without twisting the cable should choose a four-way head, and the N180 is the inexpensive way to get one.
