Thermal Camera vs Borescope: Which Inspection Tool Does What?

A thermal camera scans surfaces for the signature of what lies behind them. A borescope goes through a small hole and shows it. For most building problems the thermal camera comes first and the borescope confirms, with a moisture meter between them.

A thermal camera images surface temperatures across a whole wall, ceiling or machine from a distance, revealing patterns caused by what is behind or inside: missing insulation, damp, hot components, air leaks. A borescope is a camera on a probe that goes through a hole a few millimeters wide and shows the cavity, duct or bore directly. The thermal camera is fast, non-invasive and indirect; the borescope is slow, minimally invasive and direct. In practice they form a sequence: scan with the thermal camera, confirm with a moisture meter, look with the borescope.

Where each is the right tool

Thermal camera

  • Whole-house insulation and air-leak surveys.
  • Finding the extent of a damp area on a ceiling.
  • Locating heating pipes and underfloor loops.
  • Spotting a warm breaker or bearing among many.
  • Anything where you do not know where to look.

Borescope

  • Checking a wall bay the thermal camera flagged: is the insulation wet, missing or moldy?
  • Inspecting ducts, drains, flues and behind fixed units.
  • Engines, machinery, appliance internals.
  • Confirming pest activity.
  • Anything where you know where to look and need to see it.

The workflow

  1. Scan the area with the thermal camera under suitable conditions; see why thermal images change with weather. Note anomalies.
  2. Confirm damp anomalies with a moisture meter, comparing against a dry reference; see can thermal imaging find water leaks.
  3. Look with the borescope through a small hole at the confirmed spot to identify the cause and extent.
  4. Document all three: thermal image, meter readings, borescope stills.

What neither can do

Neither sees through solid material. The thermal camera infers from the surface; the borescope needs a hole. Neither measures moisture; that is the meter’s job. Which should I buy first for home inspection?

Can a borescope find missing insulation?

Only at the spot you look. A thermal camera shows the whole wall at once; the borescope then checks a particular bay.
