Extras You Will Use
Non-contact voltage, temperature, capacitance and a backlight are worth paying for. Bluetooth usually is not.
True-RMS meters calculate the real effective value of an AC waveform. Averaging meters assume a clean sine wave and read low on the distorted waveforms produced by dimmers, LED drivers, variable-speed motors and inverters. For anything beyond checking an outlet, True-RMS is worth having.
What CAT rating do I need at home?
CAT III 600 V covers distribution panels, fixed wiring and outlets in a typical home. CAT II is limited to outlets and plug-in equipment. The rating must be on the meter and the leads; it is a design and input-protection standard, not a marketing tier.
Can I measure current in a household circuit with a multimeter?
Only by breaking the circuit and putting the meter in series, up to the meter's 10 A limit, which is impractical and risky for mains. For household current measurements a clamp meter reads through the insulation without disconnecting anything.
What is ghost voltage?
Capacitive coupling between a dead conductor and a live one nearby can induce a small phantom voltage that a high-impedance meter displays as 30 to 90 V. A LoZ (low impedance) mode or a solenoid tester loads the circuit and makes the phantom disappear, showing the wire is actually dead.
Is a non-contact voltage tester enough?
It is the right first check and the safest one, but it only says whether AC voltage is present, not how much. Confirm with the meter before working on anything.

Fluke 117 Electrician's Multimeter Best Overall
The Fluke 117 is the meter electricians buy for residential work, and the reasons apply equally to a careful homeowner. It is True-RMS, so it reads correctly on the chopped waveforms from dimmers and modern power supplies. AutoVolt picks AC or DC automatically. VoltAlert detects voltage without touching a conductor, which is the safest first check on any outlet or wire.
The feature that separates it from cheaper meters is LoZ, a low-impedance input mode. Long runs of cable pick up capacitive "ghost" voltage that a high-impedance meter shows as 50 or 80 volts on a dead wire; LoZ loads the circuit slightly and shows the truth. Fluke rates the 117 CAT III 600 V, which covers distribution panels and fixed wiring in a house.
The display has a bright white backlight and the battery lasts around 400 hours. It is expensive for a meter that will spend most of its life in a drawer, but it is the one you can trust on a panel.
The MM420 covers the same ground as the Fluke 117 with a few extras and at a lower price. It is auto-ranging and True-RMS, measures to 600 V AC/DC and 10 A, and adds capacitance, frequency, duty cycle and temperature via the included thermocouple, which is why it suits HVAC and appliance work where you want to check a capacitor and a supply temperature with one tool.
Klein's Lead-Alert lights the correct input jacks for the selected function, a small feature that prevents the most common beginner mistake of measuring voltage with the leads in the current jacks. The case is rated to survive a 2 m drop and the leads have CAT III/CAT IV safety caps.
It lacks the Fluke's LoZ mode and non-contact voltage detector, so pair it with a separate non-contact tester for wall wiring. Battery is two AAA cells.

The two specifications that keep you safe
A multimeter’s safety category (CAT II, III or IV with a voltage) describes how much transient energy the meter’s inputs can absorb without arcing over. Household panels and fixed wiring are CAT III territory; a CAT II meter belongs on outlets and plug-in equipment only. The second is input protection: proper fuses on the current inputs (ceramic HRC fuses in better meters) and the right leads with finger guards and shrouded plugs. Neither appears in feature lists, and both matter more than count or Bluetooth.
True-RMS versus averaging
Averaging meters measure the average of a rectified waveform and scale it assuming a pure sine wave. Anything that chops or distorts the waveform, which today includes almost every LED driver, dimmer, variable-speed motor and switch-mode power supply, makes an averaging meter read low by 10 to 40 percent. True-RMS meters compute the real effective value. The price difference has shrunk to the point where True-RMS is the default recommendation.
Auto-ranging and counts
Auto-ranging meters select the measurement scale automatically; manual meters make you turn the dial to a range that fits. Counts (2000, 4000, 6000) describe display resolution: a 6000-count meter shows 5.999 V where a 2000-count meter shows 5.99 V. More counts is nicer, not essential.

Multimeter or clamp meter
A multimeter measures current by being placed in series with the circuit, which is fine for a car fuse and impractical for a mains appliance. A clamp meter measures current through the insulation. If your main interest is how much current an appliance draws, buy a clamp meter; if it is voltage, continuity and components, buy a multimeter.
Using it safely
Inspect leads for cracks and check the meter on a known live source before trusting a dead reading.
Put the leads in the voltage jacks before touching a live circuit; never measure voltage with the leads in the current jacks.
Keep fingers behind the guards, one hand in a pocket when probing a panel.
Prove dead, then prove the meter again on a live source.
