Check 2: Price and size
An NDIR module alone costs more than many “10-in-1” air quality gadgets sell for. A very cheap device claiming CO₂ plus PM2.5, formaldehyde, TVOC, temperature and humidity in a pocket-sized case is almost certainly estimating the CO₂ channel. Genuine NDIR monitors are larger, slower to respond, and draw enough power that battery models sample every minute or more.
Check 3: The breath test
- Let the monitor run for five minutes.
- Breathe gently toward it from about arm’s length for a few seconds.
- A real sensor rises by hundreds of ppm within seconds (or at its next sample on a battery unit) and recovers over two to five minutes.
An estimator may also respond, because breath contains VOCs, so this test alone is not conclusive. It does confirm the sensor is alive and sampling.
Check 4: The sanitizer test
