Disconnect the panel from the charge controller or inverter so nothing loads it. Set a multimeter to DC volts on a range above the panel’s Voc (60 V range for a single module; a 1000 V-rated meter for strings). With the panel in daylight, touch red to the positive lead and black to the negative lead and read. Compare with the nameplate Voc corrected for temperature: about 0.3 percent higher per °C below 25 °C, lower per °C above. A reading within a few percent is normal; a third or two thirds low means a bypass diode or sub-string fault; zero means an open circuit.
Why Voc is useful
It confirms the panel’s cells and connections are intact, and it is the highest voltage the panel produces, which governs inverter input limits and string design. It does not confirm the panel can deliver power; a panel with a cracked cell or shading can show normal Voc and produce half its rating. See Voc vs operating voltage.
Procedure
- Isolate. Disconnect the panel’s MC4 leads from the system, or open the string disconnect. Do not disconnect under load; DC arcs sustain. Cover the panel or wait for low light if you must open a loaded connector.
- Meter. DC volts; range above expected Voc; a CAT III meter rated for the voltage. Leads in the volt jacks.
- Connect. Red probe to the positive MC4 pin, black to the negative. MC4-to-banana adapters make this safe and repeatable.
- Read in daylight. Note the time, weather and panel temperature if you can.
- Compare with the corrected nameplate value.
Temperature correction
Corrected Voc = nameplate Voc × (1 + coefficient × (cell temperature − 25)). The Voc temperature coefficient is on the datasheet, typically −0.25 to −0.35 %/°C. Example: nameplate 49.0 V, coefficient −0.29 %/°C, cell at 10 °C: 49.0 × (1 + (−0.0029) × (−15)) = 49.0 × 1.0435 = 51.1 V. On a hot roof at 55 °C the same panel reads 49.0 × (1 − 0.087) = 44.7 V. Cell temperature is roughly panel back temperature plus 2 to 3 °C.
Interpreting
| Reading | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Within ±3% of corrected nameplate | Normal |
| Slightly low (5 to 10%) | Hotter than estimated, aged panel, or a slightly degraded cell string |
| About one third low | One bypass diode shorted or one sub-string open |
| About two thirds low | Two diodes or sub-strings affected |
| Zero | Open circuit: connector, junction box, cable, or all diodes |
| Reversed sign | Leads swapped; polarity of the panel leads is as labeled |
Strings
String Voc is the sum of the panel Vocs. Measure at the combiner or inverter DC terminals with the string isolated, using a meter and leads rated for the voltage (often 500 to 700 V on residential strings). A string reading low by one panel’s Voc has a panel with a fault or a bypassed sub-string; test panels individually to find it.
Safety
- Panels are live whenever light hits them; treat the leads as energized.
- Meter and leads rated CAT III at the string voltage. See how to choose a multimeter for solar panels.
- Never open a connector under load. Isolate at the disconnect first.
- Keep one hand clear; the string is a high-voltage DC source.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my measured Voc higher than the label?
The label is at 25 °C cell temperature. On a cold morning cell voltage rises about 0.3 percent per °C below 25 °C, so a panel at 5 °C reads about 6 percent above the label.
Does Voc depend on sunlight?
Only weakly. Voc is nearly full even in dim light and changes little from 200 to 1,000 W/m². Temperature is the main influence.
Voc reads a third low. What is wrong?
A bypass diode conducting permanently or a sub-string failed. Panels have three diodes each protecting a third of the cells; one shorted diode removes a third of the Voc.
