What Makes a Good Thermal Image for Building Inspection?

A thermal image that proves something has a fixed temperature scale, a consistent palette, a reference area in frame and a matching visible photo. Auto-scaled snapshots look dramatic and prove nothing.

A good thermal image for building inspection is one that another person can interpret without being there. That means it was taken under conditions that create real contrast, with a locked temperature span so colors mean the same thing across the survey, framed square-on from a distance that resolves the defect, with a known-good reference area in the same frame, paired with a visible photograph, and with the camera’s emissivity and reflected temperature set sensibly. The camera model matters less than these habits.

Conditions first

No amount of camera skill fixes a survey done at noon on a mild day. A sustained inside-outside difference of 10 °C or more, no recent sun on the surfaces, little wind and dry weather are the starting point. See why thermal images change with weather.

Lock the span

Auto-scaling maps the coldest and hottest pixels in view to the ends of the palette. Point at a wall with a 2 °C spread and it looks like a disaster; include a radiator in the frame and the same wall goes flat. For a survey, set a manual span that suits the task (for interior walls in winter, something like 12 to 22 °C) and keep it for every shot of the same type. Then a cool patch in image 7 is comparable with one in image 3, and the report can say so.

Choose a palette and stick to it

  • Ironbow / iron: the general-purpose choice; intuitive warm-to-cool ramp.
  • Grayscale: best for spotting subtle gradients; least dramatic.
  • Rainbow / high contrast: useful for small differences with a locked span; noisy and misleading on auto.
  • Isotherm or alarm: highlights everything above or below a set temperature; good for dew-point checks.

Switching palettes mid-survey makes images impossible to compare.

Frame it properly

  1. Stand square to the surface; emissivity drops at grazing angles and reflections increase.
  2. Get close enough that the feature covers several pixels; see thermal camera resolution explained.
  3. Include a reference: a known-dry, known-insulated area of the same material in the same frame, so the anomaly has a comparison.
  4. Keep yourself, lamps and windows out of reflective surfaces.
  5. Focus. Many cameras have manual focus; a soft image smears temperatures.
  6. Take the visible photo from the same spot, or use the camera’s paired capture.

Set the parameters

Emissivity at 0.95 for building materials, reflected temperature at room temperature or measured from foil, distance roughly correct. Record them; a report that states them is credible. See what emissivity is.

Annotate and confirm
