Place a CO₂ monitor at breathing height (1 to 1.5 m), on an interior wall or open shelf, at least a meter from the nearest person, and away from doors, windows, supply vents, radiators and direct sun. That position samples well-mixed room air. The most common mistakes, a monitor on the desk in front of someone or on the windowsill, produce readings hundreds of ppm from the truth in opposite directions. Test a location by comparing it with a second spot for an hour; if they differ by more than 100 ppm, one of them is wrong.
The five rules
- Height 1 to 1.5 m. The breathing zone. Floor level and ceiling level are both unrepresentative.

- Away from air inlets and outlets. Windows, doors, supply diffusers, extract grilles and fans all deliver air that has not mixed.
- Away from heat and sun. Radiators, lamps and sunlight warm the sensor and shift readings on some units.
- Not enclosed. Not in a cupboard, drawer, corner behind furniture or against a curtain.

Testing a location
- Place the monitor in the candidate spot and a second monitor (or the same one on a second day) in the middle of the room on a stand.
- Leave both for an hour with normal occupancy.
- If they agree within about 100 ppm, the spot is representative. If the candidate reads consistently higher, it is too near people; lower, too near fresh air.

Automatic calibration and placement
