What Is an Environmental Data Logger?

A data logger measures on a schedule and stores the results, unattended, for days to years. It answers questions a handheld meter cannot: what happened overnight, last week, or while the room was empty.

An environmental data logger is a self-contained instrument that measures one or more conditions, most often temperature and humidity, at a set interval and stores the readings in memory for later download. It runs unattended on a battery for months or years, and the output is a time-stamped record rather than a single reading. Loggers exist for CO₂, light, sound, pressure, voltage, current and almost any other quantity, and they are the tool for questions about what happened over time rather than what is happening now.

What a logger does that a meter cannot

  • Records overnight and while nobody is present.
  • Shows patterns: daily cycles, weekly cycles, the effect of a change made on Tuesday.
  • Provides evidence: a cold-chain shipment, a landlord dispute about damp, a classroom’s ventilation.
  • Catches transients a spot check would miss: a freezer door left open, a heating failure at 3 a.m.

Specifications that matter

  • Measured quantities and accuracy. ±0.3 to 0.5 °C and ±2 to 3 percent RH are typical for good loggers; cheap ones are wider. Accuracy is often stated only over a sub-range.
  • Logging interval. From one second to hours. Shorter intervals fill memory and drain batteries faster; see how often sensors should record.
  • Memory. 16,000 to 500,000 readings. At 10-minute intervals, 16,000 readings is about 110 days.
  • Battery life. One to three years for USB loggers; months for wireless.
  • Start and stop. Delayed start, button start, or start on a set date.
  • Alarms. High and low thresholds with an LED, app notification or email.
  • Export. CSV is the useful format; some vendors lock data in proprietary software.

  • Environmental rating. IP rating for outdoor or washdown use; temperature range of the logger body, which may be narrower than the probe.
