Four checks decide the purchase:
Depth Matches the Material
Thin flooring wants a 1/4 in setting; drywall and boards want about 3/4 in; only a deep leak hunt behind tile or under a floor justifies the 4 in Extech.
Material Modes
A selectable mode or pre-calibration for the material you scan keeps the number honest. A relative mode is fine for finding; a wood percentage is needed for certifying.
Calibration Reference
The Orion ships with a calibrator; the Aquant checks itself. A meter with neither should be checked against a known-dry sample each day.
Flat Contact
Pinless pads need full, flat contact. Curved logs, rough masonry and narrow trim read low or erratically; that is a pin meter job.
How deep does a pinless moisture meter really read?
As deep as the manufacturer states, but not uniformly. Most listings here state about 3/4 in; the Tramex ME5 states 1.25 in on its deep setting and the Extech MO57A states 4 in. The sensor responds most to material close to the pad and less to material at the limit, so a wet layer at the stated depth reads weaker than the same wetness at the surface.
Is a deeper-reading pinless meter always better?
No. Depth beyond the material being checked reads whatever is behind it: the subfloor under a floorboard, the stud or pipe behind drywall. A 4 in meter such as the Extech MO57A is a leak finder for tracing water behind tile or under floors, while a 1/4 in setting is what keeps a veneer reading honest. Match the depth to the thickness.
What does relative mode mean on a pinless meter?
A comparative number with no material calibration behind it, used by reading a dry area first and comparing. The Wagner Orion listings state a relative mode for engineered wood and drywall, and the Klein ET140 reads relative on everything. It finds wet areas well but does not give a moisture percentage.
Why does the Kiprim listing advise against using it on drywall?
The manufacturer states that low-density materials such as drywall can produce inconsistent readings on that sensor because of density differences, and that metal, pipes or wiring behind the surface affect the reading. It is an unusually candid note, and the same interference applies to every pinless meter, whether the listing says so or not.
Can a pinless meter be used on a curved or rough surface?
Poorly. The sensor pad needs flat, full contact; a log, a round post, rough block or narrow trim leaves air under part of the pad and the reading drops or wanders. Those are pin meter jobs, which is why many professionals carry both types or a dual-function meter.

For materials other than solid wood, the listing states a relative mode for engineered wood, drywall and similar, which is a comparative reading rather than a percentage. The shallow setting reaches 0.4 in (9 mm) and the deep setting 1.25 in (30 mm), the deepest dual-depth pair in this group, and the listing describes the shallow setting as the way to keep a substrate from influencing a reading on a covering.
Scales are stated: wood moisture content 5 to 30% with adjustment tables for wood density, and a 0 to 100 comparative scale for everything else. The display is an analog needle with an optional audio tone, which owners of survey meters tend to prefer for sweeping a wall, and Bluetooth links to the Tramex app for moisture maps, geotags, time stamps and photos.
There is no pin mode and no field calibration reference described on the listing, and an analog needle is slower to write down than a digital number. For a survey meter that has to move between materials all day, those are small costs.

The ET140 is the pinless meter to buy when the job is finding wet areas rather than certifying dry ones. Klein states a 3/4 in reading depth through an electromagnetic field sensor and names the four materials it is calibrated for, drywall, masonry, hardwood and softwood, which is more than most lower-cost pinless listings admit.
The reading is relative moisture content on a reverse-contrast display with nine LED bars. That makes it a comparison tool: read a dry area, sweep, watch the bars. It has no numeric percentage, no material modes to select, no dual depth and no logging, so a flooring installer who needs a wood percentage and an acclimation record should look at the Orion.
Build details are practical: 2 m drop protection, a hold button, low battery warning, auto power-off and a 9V battery. Among the lower-cost meters in the table, the General MMD7NP adds softwood and hardwood percentage ranges and the Proster adds material modes, but the Klein listing is the clearest about what it is and is not calibrated for.

How a pinless meter reads, and why depth is the first question
A pinless meter sends an electromagnetic field through a flat pad on its back and measures the capacitance of the material in front of it, which rises with water content. Nothing penetrates the surface, so it can be used on finished floors, painted walls and trim without a mark, and it can be swept across a wall far faster than a pin meter can be pushed in. The field reaches a stated depth, about 3/4 in on most units here, and everything within that depth contributes: the board, the paint, and whatever sits behind it. Single depth, dual depth and the 4-inch outlier
Most of the meters state a single depth: 3/4 in on the Klein ET140, General MMD7NP, Protimeter Aquant and Proster, 0.75 in on the Extech MO257 by its bullet text, 40 mm on the Kiprim WM01. Two state a pair. The Wagner Orion 950 reads at 1/4 in and 3/4 in, which keeps a thin wear layer or veneer separate from the substrate; the Tramex ME5 reads at 0.4 in and 1.25 in and describes the shallow setting as the way to eliminate substrate influence when testing coverings. Material modes and what the scales mean
Wood is the only material that comes out as a real percentage. The Tramex ME5 states 5 to 30% with density adjustment tables, the General MMD7NP states 0 to 53% for softwood and 0 to 35% for hardwood, and the Proster states 5 to 75% for wood. The Wagner listing gives no range at all. The limits: correction, interference and contact
Pinless meters have three failure modes worth stating plainly. Species and density correction: a wood percentage is only as good as the density setting behind it, and a drywall, plaster or concrete reading is relative unless the meter has a mode for that material; concrete slabs for flooring are certified by relative humidity probe methods that a pinless meter can only estimate. Interference: metal studs, corner bead, pipes and wiring within the reading depth raise the number, so a reading that repeats at stud spacing is framing. Contact: the pad needs to sit flat on the surface, so logs, rough block, narrow trim and curved stock read low or drift with hand pressure. A pin meter, which reads only between its two points, covers those cases and does not care about what is 3/4 in behind them; it leaves holes, which is the trade the pin-type moisture meter guide works through.
Calibration and logging
Two listings describe a way to check the meter on site. Wagner ships an On-Demand Calibrator with the Orion 950, 930 and 910; Protimeter states automatic calibration checks and user field calibration on the Aquant. The General MMD7NP is described as auto-calibrating. The rest say nothing, so a daily check against a sample known to be dry is the substitute. For records, the Orion 950 and Tramex ME5 send readings to apps over Bluetooth, and the Aquant logs with time and date stamps; the lower-cost units rely on a hold button.
