How to Choose a Thermal Camera for Electrical Work
Four questions settle it:
Resolution at Panel Distance
A 320 x 240 detector resolves individual breaker lugs from a safe standing distance. Compare native counts, not upscaled ones.
Upper Temperature Limit
Breakers and motors rarely exceed a few hundred degrees, but a 550 C limit leaves headroom for a failing connection or process equipment.
Measurement Tools
Spot readings, hot-spot tracking and alarms turn a picture into a number you can log. The Thor002 and TR20 state them; the FLIR listings do not.
Safety and Follow-Up
The camera is non-contact, but opening a panel is not. Wear the PPE the site requires and use a meter rated for the location for any follow-up measurement.
Does the panel need to be under load for a thermal scan?
Yes. A loose connection only heats when current flows through it, so scan with the circuits carrying their normal load, ideally at a busy time of day. A panel scanned with everything switched off shows nothing.
What temperature rise counts as a problem on a breaker or lug?
Compare the component with its neighbors carrying similar load rather than with an absolute number. A connection noticeably hotter than identical ones beside it is the finding; the site's maintenance standard sets the rise that triggers a work order. Record the emissivity setting and the load with the image.
Why does a bare copper bus bar look cold on the camera?
Shiny metal has low emissivity, so it emits little infrared and reflects its surroundings; the camera reads it low. Set the emissivity for the surface or use a piece of electrical tape as a reference target where it is safe to do so. Painted enclosures and insulated cable read more truthfully.
Can I use a thermal camera instead of a clamp meter?
No. The camera shows relative heating; it does not measure current, voltage or resistance. Once it flags a hot connection, the follow-up is a clamp meter or multimeter rated CAT III or CAT IV for the location. Never use a meter above its CAT or voltage rating.

The E8 Pro is the maintenance camera for a facility that scans the same panels every quarter and needs the images to be comparable. FLIR states a native 320 x 240 detector, a measurement range from -20 to 550 C that covers anything a breaker or a motor housing will reach, and MSX, which embosses the visible edges of breakers, labels and conduit onto the thermal image so the hot lug in the picture can be matched to the one in the panel.
Documentation is where it pulls ahead of the value picks: images go over Wi-Fi to FLIR Ignite for storage, editing and sharing, the camera takes over-the-air updates, and FLIR covers the detector for 10 years.
The listing does not state NETD, field of view, refresh rate, spot-measurement tools or battery life. Those are in the FLIR datasheet rather than on Amazon, and a buyer who wants six simultaneous spot readings on screen will find the Thor002 states them where FLIR does not.

The Thor002 is the pick for a technician who wants to read temperatures on site rather than back at a desk. Thermal Master states a 3.5-inch 640 x 480 IPS screen, six simultaneous measurement points (center, hottest, coldest and three user-defined), adjustable emissivity for bus bars versus painted enclosures, automatic high and low temperature alarms and a laser pointer for aiming. The range of -4 to 1022 F matches the E8 Pro and the stated accuracy is plus or minus 3.6 F.
The detector is 256 x 192 native, upscaled to 512 x 384 by what the manufacturer calls X3 technology; compare the native figure with the FLIR cameras, not the upscaled one. Sensitivity is stated at 40 mK and refresh at 25 Hz.
Field practicality is strong: a 5000 mAh battery stated at 10.5 hours, 18 W fast charging, IP54, 2 m drop rating, 32 GB storage, voice notes, QR code file tagging and USB or Wi-Fi transfer to a PC, phone or iPad. There is no cloud service equivalent to Ignite.

The C8 is the camera an electrician actually keeps in a pocket, which means it is the one that gets used on the walk past a panel rather than left in the truck. FLIR states the same 76,800-pixel detector count as the E8 Pro, a 35-degree horizontal field of view that frames a residential panel from a comfortable distance, MSX for readable images and direct upload to Ignite for reports. The 2-year camera and 10-year detector warranty match the larger FLIR models.
The listing does not state the temperature range, so a buyer scanning high-temperature process equipment should confirm the upper limit in the FLIR datasheet; for panels, breakers and motor housings the C8 is widely used. It also does not state NETD, refresh rate or battery life.

What a thermal camera finds in electrical maintenance
Electrical faults that are about to become failures usually announce themselves as heat. A loose lug, a corroded breaker contact, an unbalanced load across three phases, a motor bearing running dry: each produces a component that is hotter than the identical ones next to it while the circuit is carrying load. A thermal camera shows that difference in one frame, without contact, from a standing distance in front of the open panel. The finding is comparative, not absolute: the useful observation is that one breaker is running well above its neighbors under similar load, and the image plus a temperature reading goes into the maintenance record so the next scan can be compared. Temperature range and why the upper limit matters here
Unlike envelope work, electrical scans occasionally meet surfaces that are genuinely hot. A failing connection, a motor housing on a stalled drive or a heating element can exceed what an entry camera can measure, and once the reading saturates the camera can no longer tell you how bad it is. The FLIR E8 Pro and E6 Pro state a range to 550 C, the Thor002 and MiLESEEY TR20 state 1022 F, the Thermal Master P4 states 1112 F and the TOPDON TC004 Mini 842 F; the FLIR E5 Pro and C5 stop at 400 C and the C8 listing does not state a range at all. For breakers and switchgear any of these suffice; for process equipment or motor troubleshooting, the higher limits are worth having.
Resolution and spot size at panel distance
You scan a panel from where it is safe to stand, not from a few inches away, so the detector has to resolve individual lugs at that distance. A 320 x 240 detector (76,800 pixels) does that comfortably; a 160 x 120 detector (19,200 pixels) blends adjacent breakers together and can hide which one is hot. The E8 Pro, C8 and TR20 are native 320 x 240. The Thor002 and P4 are native 256 x 192, with software upscaling to 512 x 384 that the manufacturers describe as X3 or Super Resolution; the TC004 Mini is 128 x 128 native with enhancement to 240 x 240. Upscaling smooths the image but adds no measurements, so compare native figures. Where the manufacturer states a field of view, narrower puts more pixels on the panel: the C8 states 35 degrees horizontal, the TC004 Mini 40 by 30 degrees and the P4 56 by 42 degrees; the FLIR E-series listings do not state one.
Screen, refresh rate and measurement tools
This is where the Thor002 justifies its place above cameras with a larger native detector. Its listing states a 3.5-inch 640 x 480 IPS screen, six simultaneous measurement points including center, hottest, coldest and three user-defined spots, adjustable emissivity, automatic high and low alarms and a laser for aiming, all of which turn a picture into a number a technician can log while standing at the panel. The TR20 states auto hot and cold spot tracking, alarms and video recording; the TC004 Mini states highest, lowest and center spots with an alarm that automatically captures a photo. The FLIR listings describe resolution, range, MSX and Ignite cloud but do not itemize spot tools, and they do not state a refresh rate where the Thor002, TR20, P4 and TC004 Mini all state 25 Hz. FLIR publishes those details in its datasheets; the Amazon listing is simply thinner. For a maintenance program the FLIR strength is the record: MSX makes the hot lug identifiable in the image, and Ignite stores and shares it.
Emissivity, reflections and shiny copper
Bare copper bus bars, aluminum lugs and stainless enclosures have low emissivity: they emit little infrared and reflect their surroundings, so the camera reads them low and can miss a genuinely hot connection while showing a reflection of the technician as a warm patch. Set the emissivity for the surface being read, or use a high-emissivity reference such as a small piece of electrical tape where it is safe to apply one, and compare like with like: painted enclosure to painted enclosure, insulated cable to insulated cable. Safety: the camera is non-contact, the panel is not
A thermal scan is safer than most electrical measurements because nothing touches a conductor, but the panel still has to be opened while it is energized and under load, and that is work for a qualified person wearing the PPE the site and the arc-flash assessment require. The camera does not change the hazard. When the scan flags a hot connection, the follow-up measurement is made with a clamp meter or multimeter rated for the location: CAT III 1000 V or CAT IV 600 V describe the transient withstand of the instrument, with the higher category being the tougher environment, and a meter must never be used above its CAT or voltage rating.
