Short answer: the E8 Pro is a working instrument for anyone who charges for thermal inspection or surveys energised equipment at a distance. The C5 is the right buy for building faults, moisture, heating loops and general troubleshooting, where large temperature differences make high resolution unnecessary.

The Only Question That Settles It
Does anyone pay you for the image? If a photograph ends up in a report that justifies a repair, a claim or an invoice, it has to survive being cropped, printed and questioned, and 76,800 samples survive that better than 19,200. If the image is a private diagnostic that helps you decide where to cut a hole, nobody will ever zoom in, and the C5 tells you the same thing for a fraction of the outlay.
Match the Camera to the Size of the Fault
Thermal faults come in two rough sizes. Building faults are large: a cold band along a rim joist, a wet patch spreading through a ceiling, a loop of underfloor heating that is not flowing. These are tens of centimetres across and produce clear gradients, so they are visible on almost any thermal camera and the C5 handles them comfortably. Equipment faults are small: a lug, a terminal, a bearing, a fuse clip. Those are measured in centimetres, usually from behind a barrier, and that is the situation the E8 Pro exists for. See thermal camera resolution explained for how to work out the distance at which your camera stops resolving a given target.
The Temperature Ceiling
The C5 stops at a stated 400 C and the E8 Pro at a stated 550 C. This only matters for combustion and process work. Point any camera at something above its ceiling and the reading saturates, giving a confidently wrong number rather than an obvious error, which is a good reason to know your ceiling before you rely on a reading from a flue or a manifold.
There Is a Middle
This comparison brackets the family rather than describing it. The C8 puts the E8 Pro class detector in the C5 body, and the E5 Pro puts the C5 class detector in the E8 Pro body. Most buyers who start at these two extremes end up choosing one of the two cameras in between.
Who Buys Which
- Homeowner or landlord: C5, and only if the property gives you a reason to own one.
- Trades using thermal as a secondary tool: C5.
- Electrical contractor, thermographer, predictive maintenance: E8 Pro.
- Anyone inspecting flues, kilns or exhaust systems: E8 Pro for the stated ceiling.
How We Research
Specifications come from the manufacturer listings and published documentation for each camera. We did not run laboratory tests and publish no measurements of our own. The full ranking is in the thermal imaging camera roundup.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the E8 Pro worth several times the C5?
It is if you sell thermal inspections or survey electrical equipment from a distance. It is not if your thermal work is finding damp, draughts and underfloor heating loops, all of which the C5 resolves at room distance.
How much better is 320 by 240 than 160 by 120?
Four times the detector pixels, so each pixel covers a quarter of the area at the same distance. That is the difference between measuring a small warm connection and averaging it with the cool metal around it.
Can the C5 find a hot breaker?
With the cover off and the camera close, yes. From a safe standoff distance in a large panel, expect the hot spot to blend into its surroundings and read lower than it is.
Do both save to the cloud?
Both listings state FLIR Ignite. The E8 Pro listing also states over the air updates.
