How to Set Useful CO₂ Alerts Without Overreacting

An alert that fires every afternoon and gets ignored is worse than none. Set thresholds that match the action you will take, add a delay so breath spikes do not trigger, silence the buzzer at night, and route notifications to whoever controls the ventilation.

Set two alert levels tied to actions: 1,000 ppm means open a window at the next convenient moment; 1,500 ppm means ventilate now. Add a delay of a few minutes so a person leaning over the monitor does not trigger it, and a re-arm gap so the alert does not repeat while the reading hovers. Turn the buzzer off overnight and rely on a light or a phone notification. Send the notification to the person who can actually open the window or adjust the HVAC, not to everyone.

Avoiding false alerts

  • Hysteresis. Alert at 1,000 ppm, clear only when below 900 ppm. Without it a reading hovering at 1,000 fires repeatedly.

  • Color indicator: always on; the primary signal in shared rooms.
