How to Use an Air Quality Monitor With an Air Purifier

A purifier's own sensor sits at its intake and tells you about the air it is cleaning, not the air you are breathing. An independent monitor across the room shows whether the purifier is sized and placed right, and can switch it on when it matters.

Place the monitor on the opposite side of the room from the purifier, at breathing height. Create a particle event (cook, or light and blow out a candle), turn the purifier on high, and time how long PM2.5 takes to halve. A properly sized purifier halves it about every 10 minutes; slower means the purifier is too small, badly placed or the room is open to the rest of the house. Then set the purifier’s auto mode or, better, let a Wi-Fi monitor trigger it, and keep the monitor as the arbiter of whether the air is actually clean.

Why the purifier’s sensor is not enough

Built-in sensors are cheap laser or infrared dust sensors mounted at the intake. The purifier’s own clean output dilutes the air around it, so the sensor reads cleaner than the room, and auto modes throttle back too early. Step 1: Place the monitor

Opposite side of the room from the purifier, 1 to 1.5 m high, away from the door and windows. Not in the purifier’s outlet stream.

Step 2: Measure the decay

  1. Close the door and windows.
  2. Raise PM2.5: cook something in oil, or light a candle for a minute and blow it out. Wait for the reading to peak and stabilize.
  3. Turn the purifier on high. Note the time and the reading.
  4. Note the time when the reading has halved, and halved again.

Step 3: Fix sizing and placement

  • Clean-air delivery rate (CADR) should be at least two thirds of the room’s floor area in square feet (for 8-foot ceilings) for the US standard, or a CADR in m³/h at least four times the room volume in m³.
  • Place the purifier in the open, not in a corner or behind furniture; a meter of clear space around the intake and outlet.
  • Replace the filter when the halving time lengthens; the monitor shows this before the indicator does.
  • Close the door during events; an open-plan space needs a purifier sized for the whole area.

Step 4: Automate

Purifier auto modes work but react late. Wi-Fi monitors with smart-home integration (Govee monitors with Govee purifiers, Airthings via IFTTT, Qingping via HomeKit, many via Home Assistant) can switch the purifier to high when the room’s reading passes a threshold and back down when it clears. Set the threshold at about 25 to 35 µg/m³ and the clear point around 12.

Why does my purifier say the air is clean while my monitor says it is not?

The purifier measures at its own intake, where its output has just diluted the air. A monitor across the room reads what you breathe. Trust the independent monitor and move or upsize the purifier.

How fast should a purifier clear a room?

A correctly sized purifier (about 4 to 5 air changes per hour) halves PM2.5 roughly every 10 minutes. From 100 µg/m³ to under 15 should take 30 to 40 minutes.

Does a purifier lower CO₂?
