Category, Not Just Range

Match the Array

Residential strings are commonly under 600 V, commercial up to 1000 V, utility-scale 1500 V. Buy for the highest string you will ever open.

Is a multimeter with a 2000 V DC range safe on a 1500 V string?

Only if its category rating covers it. The range says what the display can show; the CAT rating says what transient the input can survive. The KPS DMM4500PV lists 2000 V DC but states CAT III 1000 V, so its protection above 1000 V is not specified on the listing. The Fluke 283FC/PV states CAT III 1500 V on the meter and the leads.

Why does open-circuit voltage read higher on a cold morning?

Voc rises as cell temperature falls. A string designed near the limit at 25 C can exceed it on a cold, clear morning, which is why string sizing uses the lowest expected temperature and why a 1000 V meter is a poor choice on a string that may exceed 1000 V in winter.

Do I need MC4 test leads?

They are the safe way to connect. MC4 is the standard PV connector, and a lead that locks into it gives a solid contact with no exposed pin. Probing a connector pin with a standard lead is the shortcut that leads to arcs and damaged connectors. The Fluke 283FC/PV and 393FC kits include them; the KPS and UNI-T listings do not mention them.

Can I measure string current with a 10 A multimeter?

Not in series on a working string. Isc scales with irradiance and a full-sun string can exceed 10 A, and breaking a live DC circuit to insert a meter is an arc hazard. Use a DC clamp such as the a283 FC in the Fluke kit or a dedicated clamp meter like the 393FC.

Short answer: for 1500 V utility-scale strings the Fluke 283FC/PV kit is the only pick that states a CAT III 1500 V rating on the meter and on its MC4 leads, and it adds a 60 A wireless clamp for string current. The KPS DMM4500PV reads to 2000 V DC and logs over Bluetooth, and the UNI-T UT196 reads to 1700 V DC in an IP65 body, but both state a category rating only to CAT III 1000 V, which makes them commercial-string meters rather than utility-string meters.

Range and rating are two different numbers

Every listing on this page quotes a maximum DC voltage, and it is the wrong number to shop by. The voltage range is what the display can resolve. The category rating, written as CAT III 1500 V or CAT III 1000 V, is what the input circuit and the leads can survive when a transient arrives on top of the working voltage, and it is the figure that keeps the meter from becoming the fault. Never use a meter above its CAT or voltage rating. What a CAT rating means covers the categories; the short version for solar is that the string voltage sets the number and the location sets the category. Of the meters here, only the Fluke 283FC/PV lists CAT III 1500 V. The KPS and UNI-T meters list wider display ranges, 2000 V and 1700 V DC, alongside a CAT III 1000 V rating.

Which strings actually reach 1500 V

Residential strings are commonly under 600 V, commercial systems run up to 1000 V, and utility-scale plants are built at 1500 V DC because higher voltage means fewer combiners and less copper. The buyer for this page is the one who opens 1000 V and 1500 V combiners, and there the meter and the leads must both be rated for the string. Remember that Voc rises in cold weather: a string that measures 1450 V at noon in summer can exceed that on a winter morning, which is one more reason the rating should exceed the design voltage rather than merely match it.

Leads matter as much as the meter

A 1500 V meter fitted with 1000 V leads is a 1000 V instrument. Current: clamp it, do not break the circuit

A multimeter with a 10 A current input, like the KPS, is fine for a single module on a bench. It is not the tool for a working string, because Isc scales with irradiance and can exceed 10 A in full sun, and because breaking a live DC circuit to insert the meter draws an arc that does not self-extinguish the way AC does. Fluke states 60 A AC/DC on individual strings using the a283 FC wireless clamp in the 283FC/PV kit, and the reading is sent to the meter so the person holding the display can stand clear of the combiner. LoZ, filters and inverter noise

Two features that look like extras are routine on a solar site. Long DC runs that are not yet connected pick up induced voltage from adjacent conductors, and a standard meter with about 10 MOhm input impedance will happily display it as if the string were live. A LoZ mode loads the circuit enough to bleed the ghost voltage away and show the real value; both the KPS and the UNI-T list it, and the low-impedance multimeter guide explains the mechanism. On the AC side of an inverter, the output waveform is switched rather than sinusoidal, and a low-pass filter is needed for a meaningful voltage or frequency reading; the UT196 lists a low-pass filter and the KPS lists high-frequency rejection.
