Does a natural gas detector pick up hydrogen?

Some catalytic and semiconductor combustible sensors respond to hydrogen, but the reading is not calibrated for it and the alarm point is set for methane. For a room that produces hydrogen, use an instrument that states hydrogen in ppm on its listing.

What concentration of hydrogen is dangerous?

Hydrogen is not toxic; the hazard is fire and explosion, which begins at the lower explosive limit of about 4 percent by volume (40,000 ppm). Why hydrogen needs its own detector

Hydrogen has no smell, no color and no odorant added the way utilities treat natural gas. HVAC technicians use a 5 percent hydrogen, 95 percent nitrogen tracer mix to find refrigerant leaks, and detectors such as the Robinair LD9-TG in the table above are built for that job with sniffer tips and sensitivity quoted in ounces per year of refrigerant equivalent. They are not room monitors and quote no ppm range. The reverse is also true: a ppm hydrogen analyzer is not a substitute for a tracer-gas sniffer on an air-conditioning circuit. If the alarm sounds

Hydrogen is not toxic, but a room at or near the LEL can ignite from a switch or a static discharge. Leave the area, do not operate electrical equipment inside it, let the ventilation run and do not re-enter until a reading taken at the ceiling zone shows the concentration has fallen well below the alarm point.
