How to Choose an Indoor Air Quality Monitor

An indoor air quality monitor is a bundle of sensors, and the bundles differ. The right one depends on what your home produces: people (CO₂), cooking and traffic (PM2.5), new materials (VOC, formaldehyde), the ground (radon). Start there.

Choose an indoor air quality monitor in three steps. First, list the pollutants your home actually has: people produce CO₂; cooking, candles and traffic produce PM2.5; new furniture, flooring and cleaning produce VOCs and formaldehyde; the ground produces radon. Second, require a real sensor for each one that matters: NDIR for CO₂, a laser particle counter for PM2.5, an electrochemical cell for formaldehyde, a dedicated radon chamber. Third, choose display, logging, power and price. A monitor with two honest sensors beats one with ten estimated ones.

  • Display: all readings at once versus cycling; readability from across the room; night dimming.

  • Power: particle sensors have fans and are usually plug-in; CO₂-only units can run on batteries for years.
  • Calibration: a documented procedure for CO₂; particle and VOC sensors are not user-calibratable.
  • Price: a real NDIR sensor and a laser particle sensor together set a floor; very cheap multi-sensor units are estimating.

Are all-in-one monitors accurate?

The CO₂ channel is accurate if NDIR; PM2.5 is reasonable for trends; VOC is a relative index; formaldehyde needs a dedicated electrochemical cell to mean anything. A monitor claiming ten pollutants in a tiny box is estimating most of them.

Do I need Wi-Fi?

For remote alerts, long history and automation, yes. For reading a display in the room, no. Wi-Fi monitors are usually plug-in.
