How to Choose an Air Quality Data Logger

Logging air quality is different from watching it. The questions become: which sensors need to be in the record, at what interval, stored where, exportable how, and for how long before the device overwrites or the cloud forgets.

Choose an air quality data logger by deciding what must be in the record (CO₂ almost always; PM2.5 if particles are the question; humidity for damp; VOC as a change indicator; radon on lower floors), then matching interval (1 to 5 minutes for CO₂ and PM2.5), storage (on-device memory downloaded regularly, or cloud with retention you have checked), export (CSV you have tested), and power (mains for continuous particle sampling). Consumer monitors with honest sensors and working export cover most building studies; professional loggers add certificates and uncertainty for research and disputes.

Step 1: Parameters

Question Parameter to log Sensor requirement
Is the room ventilated enough? CO₂ NDIR; export
Is cooking, traffic or smoke a problem? PM2.5 (PM1, PM10) Fan-driven laser sensor
Is there damp or condensation? Humidity and temperature, dew point ±3% RH capacitive; consider a second logger at the cold surface
Is something off-gassing? VOC index Metal-oxide; treat as relative
Is radon elevated? Radon long-term average Dedicated radon sensor; months of data

Step 2: Interval

Match the speed of change: CO₂ and particles move over minutes, humidity over tens of minutes, radon over hours. See how often sensors should record data.

Step 3: Storage

  • On-device: capacity in readings; overwrite behavior; download frequency needed.
  • Cloud: retention period; whether the service buffers during Wi-Fi outages; what happens if the maker discontinues it.
  • Local network: Home Assistant and similar integrations keep data on your own hardware for monitors that support them.

Step 4: Export

CSV with readable timestamps. Test it with a day’s data before starting a study. See how to export and read CO₂ monitor data.

Step 5: Power and placement

Particle sensors need a fan and are effectively plug-in. CO₂ loggers can run on batteries for years at long intervals or on mains for fast sampling. Place per the rules for each sensor; see how to place a CO₂ monitor.

Step 6: Calibration control

For long studies, CO₂ automatic baseline correction should be controllable and an outdoor check done quarterly. Particle and VOC sensors cannot be user-calibrated; log a comparison with a second unit at start and end. See how to understand automatic baseline calibration.

Multi-room fleets

For a whole home or office, a dashboard that shows every unit is worth more than a better sensor in one room. Wi-Fi monitors from one maker share a dashboard; mixed fleets need a home-automation platform. See how to build a whole-home monitoring setup. General logging principles are in what an environmental data logger is, and CO₂-specific selection in how to choose a CO₂ data logger.

Frequently Asked Questions

What interval should an air quality logger use?

One to five minutes for CO₂ and PM2.5 in occupied rooms; five to fifteen for humidity and temperature; hourly averages for radon. Faster fills memory and drains batteries without adding information.

Can consumer air quality monitors be used as loggers?

Many can, if they export CSV: Airthings, Govee, Aranet and IQAir do. Check retention and export before relying on one for a long study.

Do I need a professional logger?

For research, regulatory or evidential use, yes: calibration certificates, stated uncertainty and tamper-evident records. For understanding and improving a building, a consumer monitor with export is enough.
