When to Replace a Gas Detector

Replace a gas detector when it reaches the service life printed in its manual or on the unit, when it gives an end-of-life signal, when it fails a test and fails again after fresh batteries, or after an event that can ruin a sensor: a flood, a fire, a solvent spill or a large leak. Warranty length is not the same as sensor life.

Replace a gas detector when any one of these is true: it has reached the service life the manufacturer states, it is giving an end-of-life signal, it has failed a test and failed again after fresh batteries, it has been through a flood, a fire, a solvent spill or a heavy gas exposure, its housing or plug is damaged, or it has no readable date and nobody knows when it was bought. The Stated Service Life

Every gas sensor loses sensitivity with age, so responsible manufacturers give a number of years after which the unit should be retired, counted from either the manufacture date or the day it is powered up. The figure varies widely by product and is not always on the Amazon listing. End-of-Life Signals

Many fixed alarms, especially combination CO and gas units built to the UL 2034 CO standard, are designed to announce their own retirement with a distinct chirp pattern or a code on the display once the internal clock reaches the sensor’s rated age. Failed Tests

Unknown Age and Discontinued Models

Alarms inherited with a house or an RV are the classic unknown. If there is no date, no manual and no way to identify the model, replace it. The same goes for a model so old that its instructions cannot be found; you cannot test what you cannot decode. Renters and RV buyers should do this walkthrough on day one. Replacing Without a Gap

Buy the replacement before you retire the old unit, install it in the same spot unless the old placement was wrong, and confirm it passes its test before the old one goes in the bin. Choosing the Replacement

A replacement does not have to be the same model. Fixed alarms that have appeared since the old one was installed may add a numeric display, a longer stated life or a backup battery. Frequently Asked Questions

Is the warranty period the same as the sensor life?

No. A warranty says how long the maker will repair or replace a unit that fails; the service life says how long the sensor is expected to stay accurate. The Kidde COPDLG listing gives a 7-year limited warranty, while the Forensics Detectors listing states a 7-year sensor life and a 1-year warranty. Use the service-life figure, and where only a warranty is given, ask the manufacturer.

Can I replace just the sensor instead of the whole detector?
