How to Choose a Clamp Meter for HVAC

HVAC service needs a clamp that reads compressor and fan current, catches inrush, tests run capacitors, reads temperatures and, for gas furnaces, measures the microamp flame signal. A general clamp does some of that; an HVAC clamp does all of it in one tool.

For HVAC choose a True-RMS AC/DC clamp meter with inrush capture for compressor starts, capacitance to 1000 µF or more for run capacitors, at least one and preferably two K-type temperature inputs for split and delta-T readings, a micro-amp DC range for furnace flame sensors, LoZ and non-contact voltage for safe checks, and a CAT III 600 V rating. Specifications

  • Current: AC/DC True-RMS, 400 to 600 A, resolution 0.1 A or better; a low range with 10 mA resolution helps on control and fan circuits.
  • Inrush: 100 ms integration is the standard; it catches locked-rotor amps for diagnosing hard starts and tripping breakers.
  • Capacitance: to at least 1000 µF; 3000 µF for some start capacitors. Discharge capacitors first.
  • Temperature: K-type, −40 to 400 °C; dual inputs allow delta-T without swapping probes.
  • Micro-amps: DC µA range with 0.1 µA resolution, through the leads in series with the flame sensor wire.
  • Voltage: AC/DC to 600 V, True-RMS, LoZ, NCV.

Working notes

  1. Clamp one conductor only; a whole cable cancels. See how to measure current with a clamp meter.
  2. Zero the DC clamp before each DC reading; Hall sensors drift.
  3. Compare measured current with the nameplate RLA and FLA; high current with low airflow points to an airflow problem, high current with normal airflow to a mechanical or refrigerant problem.
  4. Discharge capacitors before testing; read with power off and the capacitor disconnected.
  5. Measure flame current in series with the sensor lead, meter on DC µA; under 1 µA means a dirty sensor or poor ground.

What makes a clamp meter HVAC-specific?

Do I need DC current for HVAC?

Increasingly yes. Inverter-driven compressors and ECM blower motors run on DC, and diagnosing them needs a DC clamp.

Gas furnace flame rectification signals are 1 to 10 µA DC. Measuring them proves the flame sensor and grounding are good; only meters with a µA range can read them.
